Early Establishment

AKMAL was established in 1956 on an 11-acre site located along Jalan Penghulu Abas, Bukit Baru, Melaka. In its initial phase, it was known as the Federal Customs Training Centre, comprising two blocks of buildings that housed administrative offices, classrooms, and residential facilities.

Renaming
In 1957, the training centre was renamed the Federal Customs Training School. At this stage, it primarily conducted refresher and enhancement courses for Customs officers.
1960
Expansion of Functions
In 1960, the scope of its training functions was expanded to include the training of Assistant Superintendents of Customs.

1963
Conferral of Royal Status
On 2 April 1963, the Federal Customs Training School was conferred Royal status by His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Following this honour, the institution was renamed the Royal Malaysian Customs Training College.
1987
Renaming and Infrastructure Development
In 1987, the institution was renamed the Royal Malaysian Customs College, reflecting its increasingly significant role. During this period, major enhancements and expansions were undertaken, including the upgrading of office buildings, hostels, and lecture rooms. Additional training facilities were developed, such as a hall, surau, sports courts, gymnasium, library, and swimming pool.

Upgrading to Academy Status
In October 1989, the Royal Malaysian Customs College was officially upgraded to become the Royal Malaysian Customs Academy (AKMAL), in line with its growing capabilities and status as a full-fledged training academy.

AKMAL Expansion Project
In 1990, the AKMAL Expansion Project was initiated, involving the construction of new facilities including administrative offices, lecture halls, an auditorium, hostels, a stadium, sports courts, and training laboratories. The project was completed in 1991.

The expanded facilities enabled AKMAL to conduct training programmes not only for Customs personnel but also for officers from other government agencies as well as members of the World Customs Organization (WCO).
